Vomiting is when stomach contents come out of the mouth. Nausea is the unpleasant feeling of the need to vomit. It may occur with dizziness, discomfort in the stomach (sour stomach), and no desire to eat.
Vomiting is a common symptom that may be due to different causes. These include gastroenteritis (stomach flu), food poisoning, and gastritis. Or it may be a side effect of certain medicines, such as opioids. Other more serious causes of vomiting may be hard to diagnose early in the illness. That's why it's important to watch for the warning signs listed below. Some people may also vomit due to strong emotions like fear or from motion sickness.
The main danger from repeated vomiting is dehydration. This is because of the loss of water and minerals from the body. When this occurs, your body fluids must be replaced. Other problems that can happen from vomiting include:
- Electrolyte imbalance
- Tears in the esophagus
- Breathing in of stomach contents (aspiration)
- Weight loss
- Not getting enough nutrients
