What is high blood sugar?

High blood sugar means that there is too much sugar (glucose) in your blood. Your body uses glucose from food for energy. But if glucose can’t move into your cells properly, such as when your body doesn’t make or use insulin effectively, sugar can build up in the blood.

What causes high blood sugar during cancer treatment?

If you have diabetes, it’s common to have more trouble managing your blood sugar during cancer treatment. There are many reasons for this.

Some medicines, such as corticosteroids, and other therapies used to treat cancer can raise blood sugar. These treatments can also cause high blood sugar in people who haven't previously been diagnosed with diabetes.

Some types of cancer, such as pancreatic cancer, can also cause blood sugar changes.

Stress, infections, and changes in your usual eating and activity habits can also lead to higher blood sugar during your cancer treatment.

Why is it important to manage your blood sugar during cancer treatment?

Keeping your blood sugar in your target range can help you feel better. It can help lower your risk of getting an infection. And keeping your blood sugar in your target range can help your body heal from wounds or surgery.

How is high blood sugar treated when you are going through cancer treatment?

Your doctor may prescribe insulin or other diabetes medicines to help manage your blood sugar. If your blood sugar is high because of a cancer treatment medicine, the doctor may change the medicine or adjust your dose.

What can you do to manage your blood sugar during cancer treatment?

  • If your doctor prescribed medicines to manage your blood sugar, take them exactly as prescribed. Contact your doctor if you think you are having a problem with your medicine. You will get more details on the specific medicines your doctor prescribes.
  • Check your blood sugar as often as your doctor recommends. You may need to check it more often than you did before you started cancer treatment.
  • If your doctor suggests it, test for ketones. Follow the doctor's instructions about what to do if the results are high.
  • Try to eat a variety of healthy foods. If you need help, ask your doctor about seeing a dietitian. A dietitian can help you plan meals that meet your health needs.
  • Stay as physically active as you can. Being active can help lower blood sugar levels. Check with your doctor before you increase your activity. Talk with your doctor about what kind of exercise and how much exercise will help you.

Follow-up care is a key part of your treatment and safety. Be sure to make and go to all appointments, and contact your doctor if you are having problems. It's also a good idea to know your test results and keep a list of the medicines you take.
