Your Well Visit (7 to 8 Years): Care Instructions

Your well visit is a regular checkup. It happens about once a year. Well visits aren't like other doctor visits you have when you're sick. This visit is a chance for your doctor to check on how you're growing and make sure you're staying healthy.

At your visit, a doctor or nurse might check things like your heart and lungs, weight, height, hearing, eyes, teeth, and how your body moves when you walk. They might also ask about school, food, activities, and healthy habits. And if you need vaccines, you might get them during your visit.

The doctor isn't the only one who gets to ask questions though! This is a great time for you to ask any questions you might have about staying healthy, or about how your body is growing.

Tips for how to take care of yourself

There's a lot you can do between your well visits to keep yourself healthy and strong. Here are some tips.

  • Eating healthy

    • Eat lots of fruits and vegetables.
    • Try new things. You might like them!
    • Choose water instead of sugary drinks like juice or soda.
  • Taking care of your body

    • Brush your teeth twice a day, and floss at least once a day.
    • Get good sleep. Follow your bedtime, and keep screens out of your room.
    • Put on sunscreen and a hat when you head outside.
    • Move your body! Things like biking, playing a sport, or going for a walk all count.
  • Staying safe

    • Always use a seatbelt (and a booster, if your parents say you still need one).
    • Wear a helmet and safety gear anytime you're on wheels, like a bike, skateboard, or scooter.
    • Be careful around roads and water.
    • Ask your parents about learning to swim. Never swim without an adult.
    • Make sure you know your home address, your phone number, and how to call 911 if you need to.
    • Be smart about strangers. Never take things from strangers or go anywhere with strangers.
    • If you see a gun, don't touch it. Leave the area, and tell your parent or a grownup right away.
    • Keep your private parts (the parts covered by a bathing suit) private. Tell your parent or another trusted grownup right away if anyone tries to see or touch them or asks you to see or touch theirs.
  • Friends and feelings

    • Be a good friend, and choose friends who are kind to you.
    • If somebody at school or somewhere else scares you or hurts you, tell a grownup you trust.
    • Everyone feels sad, worried, or angry sometimes. That's normal! Talk about your feelings with your parents or another grownup you trust.
