Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) is a therapy in which the doctor gently presses on, massages, or stretches a patient’s body to help the body feel, work, and move better.
OMT is a unique approach because it treats the whole body rather than just treating the specific pain or health issue on its own. OMT uses the relationship between the musculoskeletal system (bones, muscles, and tissues) and the rest of the body to help the body work and move better, heal, and get back to its natural balance.
OMT is often used by doctors of osteopathic medicine (DOs). Along with standard medical training, DOs get training in hands-on treatments to heal joints, muscles, and other parts of the body. OMT can also be used by medical doctors (MDs) who get a special certification.
